Choosing Nutritional Food

Whether your fitness goal is to get or stay in shape, lose or maintain weight, you must make quality nutritional food choices. High quality nutrition consists of mostly whole, unprocessed foods that are usually placed around the perimeter of your supermarket.

The inside aisles of grocery stores tend to be processed foods like cereals, crackers and less natural foods. If you keep the bulk of your shopping on the outside perimeter of your supermarket, choosing nutritional food will become easier.

Occasional “cheating” is fine now and then, but you don’t want to make a habit of straying from nutritional food in favor of less healthy fare. Processed food is loaded with empty calories; making it a regular addition to your diet will prevent you from achieving your fitness goals.

Dining Out

There are going to be times when eating at home is not an option. You might be invited to dine out with a friend or date, or used most of your lunch hour running errands and need to swing through a fast food drive-thru for a meal. While making nutritional food choices at a restaurant or settling for fast food nutrition can be a challenge, it can still be done.

Steer away from dishes loaded with heavy sauces or fried foods, go easy on the condiments, and keep a sharp eye on portion sizes. You don’t have to clean your plate; you can split an oversized entrée and save half for another meal.

Whether you are dining in or getting fast food nutrition on the go, most restaurants offer some nutritional food choices like fresh salads. Order your dressing on the side so you control the calories and fat.

A restaurant meal now and then may not be as ideal as the nutritional food you prepare in your own kitchen. You might even make some bad food nutrition choices when pressed for time or surrender to the temptation of so many enticing foods. As long as you eat a proper diet at least 90% of the time, an occasional splurge is not going to hurt.

Home Cooked Meals

Plan and prepare most of your meals in your own kitchen where you have complete control over your meals. When you prepare your own nutritional food, you can determine the ingredients that go into your meals as well as portion sizes.

You can make several servings, divide into reasonable portions and store it in individual containers for later. This will ensure you always have nutritional food prepared for times when you’re pressed for time or don’t feel like cooking. This can prevent you from making unhealthy choices by making nutritional food convenient and easy to prepare.

Good nutritional food choices can be easy to make if you arm yourself with knowledge: what to eat, when to eat and how much to eat. Make your fitness plan complete by getting regular exercise to stay healthy and burn excess calories so they won’t be stored as fat. Weight loss, maintenance, or even weight gain (for those who are underweight) can be well under your control if you know the basics of good food nutrition.
